Our sincere gratitude to Cynthia Torres, Richele Ebeling, Megan Dugan, and Kelly Kossakoski for braving the weather and posing for us all. Megan and Kelly are MUA, but also became willing models.
The photographers who managed to attend this event: Claude Zimbelmann, Jim Trotter, Randy Allen, Jerold Anna, Bernard Mallala, Andrew D'Angelo, Curt Parker, Scott Frazee, Paul Kulessa, Dave Groen, and Eric Bloemker.
Thanks to Paul Kulessa for bring his studio lights for everyone to use. Scott Frazee brought his speedlights for folks to use. Dave Groen braved the lonely creative lighting station. And Eric Bloemker sat back and enjoyed watching folks using his continuous compact florescent lighting.
Thanks to Bernard and Drew from coming to see the Saint Louis Artists Guild Photography Section. We'll hope to coax them to attend our regular Third Mondays meetings, too.
We hope everyone got some great shots, and they will be posted here soon. Photographers and Models/MUA, will receive an email on the specifics soon.

This was a COMPLETELY different experience shooting at the artists guild than past events … and the weather/chaos notwithstanding, I got much more out of it than I ever have in the past.
...and that’s with shooting roughly 1/10th the shots I’d normally shoot.
Here’s why: I learned last night.
I learned that my assumptions on things are just that – assumptions. I was able to try some things out on each of the different lighting setups (with the exception being upstairs) and see how they worked. To me, that was worth the price of attending right there. As an example, I’ve never been a huge fan of the stair shots there at the guild. And now I know why: I love shadows. We’ve always lit the holy heck out of that place, but bringing things down, and moving lights around made it a lot moodier (which is more to my style). I was also able to play with daylight balanced fluorescents, which is something I’d kind of tried out – but hadn’t really done before. I now have a better understanding when and why I would use them – and when to stay away from them.
Lastly, and this is far and away the biggest reason I enjoyed last night … I honestly felt like I could move about, and talk with people, help when asked or learn by what someone else was doing (i.e., watching Jim and Paul with the studio strobes). My favorite part of the evening, hands down, was when Claude was shooting his 4x5 view camera, and I was his off-camera, manual light-trigger. Just goes to show that when a problem comes up … people can solve photographic/lighting problems by working together and doing things unconventionally.
I’m dying to see some of Claude's shots.
The models that attended – and our wonderful MUAs - also made the night. Their willingness to try different lighting setups – and their patience – was really superb. I think they got that this was a learning experience for folks.
From a quality perspective, I have at least two images that I’m pleased to say will be going into my portfolio. All told, this was a winning evening.
Thanks, everyone... -Scott
My thanks to you, Scott for arranging all the talent.
I had a good time talking to people and observing how they went about getting their shots.
Shame the weather kept some people away for the shoot.
cheers, Eric
You guys did an outstanding job. This was my first model shoot ever and it was more enjoyable to watch some of you in action than to actually shoot. I got a lot out of Scott's perfect direction of the models and his shooting demeanor. He is excellent at putting the model at ease, directing the different positions he would like to see. He was calm, cool, collected and totally professional. Excellent shooting Scott! I look forward to seeing your images.
Eric - thanks for being there with the long lens when I needed it. It really helped me get some shots I was looking for. I am a face guy and enjoy getting the different facial expressions as opposed to the full body shots.
Like Scott - I didn't shoot nearly as many images as I thought I would. I hope we do this again soon! It was great fun!
I too am looking forward to seeing all of the shots folks got, and especially those 4x5 shots of Claude's.
Many of you are masters of this trade and I truly enjoy the opportunities to learn and improve my photographic skills by participating in events like this! Kudos!
Thanks a million! - Randy
This was my first model shoot with the artist guild. Even though lighting was not even close to what I was use to,it was a very interesting challenge with the 4x5. Next time I will know what to expect and will be more prepared for it. I also enjoyed shooting on the stairs. I'm grateful for Scott's patience and help. I really enjoyed being surrounded by such talented people. I really enjoyed talking to Randy Allen, I wish I had his talent. I could have put the camera away and spent the night just talking to the other members, there is a wealth of knowledge there.
