Great meeting starts the New Year!

Thanks to all who attended last week's meeting. Sorry about the delay in getting this info posted. Randy Allen (that would be me...) will be taking over for Dave Coblitz as the section chairperson. I hope I can serve you as well as Dave did in the past.

We had a great meeting and went over many items pertaining to the iPhone and iPad which many of you apparently use. There's a phrase in the photography world that goes something like this- "the best camera is the one you have with you". Considering we almost always have our phones with us - they could very well be that camera when we need one. While we spend all kinds of time going over manuals and learning about our DSLR's and high tech equipment, many overlook their phone and other portable peripherals as valuable tools in their day - to - day photography lives.

Now some will say that the phone does not have the quality, or that there is limited processing you can do, or that the flash is an issue, or ....... and I will say - Yes - your phone has limitations. But as technology advances - those issues will become much smaller issues. Today's iPhone 4S has an 8MP camera and takes great photos! The photos we received back from Mars for instance are taken with a 1.2MP camera. And look at what you can have in your hands!

So now is the time to start learning more about how to use that tool you carry with you every day!

Here are some ideas:

1) Use your phone while you are scouting places you would like to shoot. Shoot some shots and geo-code them so you can come back to that exact location and in the meantime - you can be mulling over the time of the day, weather and lighting aspects while having in your possession some shots of the area.

2) Use your phone to grab one of a kind shots you can't go back and get. Be sure to understand how to use your phone's camera to the best capabilities. Now - many cameras will not allow you to blow your photo up to really large sizes - you can indeed get some quite respectable camera phone images that will print very nicely. 3) Use your iPhone to take photos and transfer them to an iPad to edit them. This gives you a much bigger screen to work with and many more options.

Thanks to all who made it to the Holiday get-together. We enjoyed food, beverage, great discussions and everyone left with another artist's photo-art in hand. (Well almost everyone...)

Dave Coblitz led a brief section meeting discussing:
1) Status of the Guild -
a) Guild needs volunteers
b) Financial needs at the Guild
c) Building repairs / Maintenance
2) Photography Section fund raiser / 911 sales status
3) Upcoming January meeting topic (January 16th, 2012) will be led by Randy Allen and will include topics centered around the latest trends in digital photography with smart phones / related photo editing and portfolio software in use on the iPhone/iPad - many of which are available for other devices. People expressed lots of interest in this topic and Randy is very familiar with many iPad/iPhone applications centered around photography, art, sketching and drawing. There will be a subsequent Blog post listing various App Store / Android software that will be covered in Randy's presentation.

December 19th Informal Holiday Celebration

The Photo Section's holiday celebration will be held at the Guild 7:00 PM Monday, December 19.

There will be food and refreshments. Take along some food to share. Take along a camera friend, a date, a spouse, or all three. This meeting is a light-hearted social event.

There will be an optional Print Exchange. If you wish to participate, bring an 8x10 (or so). Everyone bringing an 8x10 will have an opportunity to exchange theirs for someone else's 8x10. It is a chance to share your work, and to receive a nice gift as well.

NOTE: Please do not bring any alcoholic beverages to this gathering. Thank You!

Canon Ink Cartridges available

I have 7 BCI-6 cartridges from my Canon i9900 (which died a tragic death on Friday). They were installed in the printer but have lots of ink left in them. Several were brand new when I installed them. I have sealed the ports and placed them in a zip lock bag. November Meeting Minutes...

Next meeting will be on Dec 19th & will be our annual holiday party & photo exchange. Each person who wants to participate will bring an 8x10 print to exchange.

Nov meeting program was a talk by Deborah Pratt on her journey from painter to photography and what sensibilities inform both in her work. Helen Hume also talked about the two pieced she has in the current show & how her photographic piece & painting relate to each other.

The upcoming 125th Anniversary party was announced. Dave Coblitz once again requested volunteers to help run the group. Dave Groen voluntered to plan the Dec meeting. Randy Allen volunteered to tale over for Eric Bloemker as our web master/blogger.

911/Guild fundraiser

The Photography Section kicked off it's fundraiser today with an exhibit of 911 images at the Guild building. The prints will be available for sale till years' end and range in size from 14 to 40 inches on the long side. Most were taken on Art Hill last week including the 3,000 flags put up in honor of the 911 victims & first responders. A significant portion of the funds raised will go to americas911foundation.org with the rest going to support the Guild. Images will be available for sale via the Guild web site soon.

In case you could not attend the last Artists Guild Photography Section meeting, here's a quick recap...

David Altman demonstrated a technique called Flow Posing which he is using for wedding photography. Doug Gordon can get dozens of unique poses accomplished in very little time. The wedding day is rushed, and the bride and groom want to get to the reception, so speed is important, but also preserving the memories and feeling of the day is important as well. The quicker you can capture those moments, the quicker everyone gets back to living.

The simple and powerful idea is to arrange the poses you want in an order that requires very small changes from shot to shot. Whether it is as simple as turning a head or placing a hand in a different location, the poses flow from one to the next with little movement required.

Jim and Joyce Trotter modeled as our newlyweds for the poses. David Altman used a set of images printed on cards connected together with a binder ring. These acted as his storybook to move from one pose to the next. No more standing back wondering what pose you have done yet. And best of all, no one is wasting time trying to swap positions and move around each other. Small movements from frame to frame.

Photography Section: June 20th Meeting - St. Charles Photoshoot

The votes been tallied. No pregnant or dangling chads. No recounts.

The next meeting of the Saint Louis Artists' Guild Photography Section will be a photoshoot in the historic district of St. Charles. Charge your batteries, clear your flashcards, and get ready. What's there to photograph in old town St. Chuck? Lots. From historic buildings, covered sidewalks, horse drawn carriages, cobblestone roads, flowers, shop windows, and people taking in all the previously mentioned things, too. Many of the shops will be closed by 7pm, so if you wanted to do some shopping, come early.

We'll converge in St. Charles on Main Street at the Gazebo (next to the Ice Cream Shop) at 7pm. We can travel as a pack, or split into smaller groups to cover the street North and South. We should have decent evening light until late, but bring a flash, tripod, or crank your ISO. Afterwards around 9pm, some of us will relax at Lewis & Clark's.

While there is parking on Main Street's cobblestone roadway, I suggest easier parking from Riverside Drive.

For those coming from St. Louis and Illinois and might be unfamiliar with St. Charles, take I-70W. Turn on the first exit after crossing the bridge - Fifth Street. Turn right on Fifth Street, and go straight through the first stop light (stop if the light is red, go on green). At the next stop light, angle right onto Boone's Lick Road. Take that road pass the stop sign and Trailhead Brewery, then angle left. You are now on Riverside Drive. Parking on Riverside Drive or the parking lots to your left. Pass the statue of Seaman (some think it is a statue of Lewis and Clark), pass the train going nowhere, pass the Train Depot, and Jackson Street soon follows - Main and Jackson is where we'll be meeting at the Gazebo. If you drove all the way to the Pavillion, you've gone too far. Find a place to park and walk back.

If you are coming from St. Charles or St. Peters or other points west of St. Charlie, I assume you know St. Charles. If not, click the link and get some google directions. If you are coming in from North County, I-370W is not really any faster than I-70W. I recommend taking I-70W.

If you end up driving to the Artists Guild that night, you'll still be able to meet-up with us in St. Charles. Just take I-64/US40 to I-170N to I-70W (25 minutes at the speed limit).

Last time I emailed, I asked for ideas for a place for a photoshoot. I received a few ideas, and I need for you to indicate to me which you prefer:

Forest Park
Tower Grove Park
Powder Valley
Laumeier Sculpture Park
Confluence Tower (Hartford, IL, $250/group)
Old Town St. Charles
City Garden
Arch
Dorsey, IL
MetroLink
Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery ("til dusk")

If I didn't list your idea, it is not that I rejected it, but I lost your email.

Various people mentioned different locations within Forest Park, but I made it into one location, figuring we could meet up, then spread out if we selected that location.

Tower Grove, Powder Valley, and Laumeier Sculpture Parks can provide many interesting views.

The Confluence Tower would take a commitment of many people to pay the fee, and no certainty of a great sunset on that day. but what a view it could provide.

St. Charles might not have much street life that night, but perhaps that is a good thing, too.

We were at the City Garden last year, and before that the arch/EastSide Observation platform. We've also been to Union Station, and nothing says we cannot revisit any of those places. Including another shoot at the Saint Louis Artists Guild park and building.

Dorsey is a town north of Alton, IL, and a member has a place up there. Might be a long drive at night for many - might want to consider a weekend shoot there.

The MetroLink idea was to have everyone meet up on the MetroLink, and ride the train to the next stop, get off to take several shots, then catch the next train, rinse, repeat, turn around and try it all again.

Evening shoots can be a challenge, but also can provide some great opportunities, too. We might get lucky on a spectacular sunset. It might rain. We might find interesting people along the way, or you might want to bring a model along to shoot. Some can look for the unordinary view of an ordinary subject.

Lantern festivals are deeply rooted in Chinese history and myth, dating back to the ancient dynasties of more than 2,000 years ago. In modern times, lantern festivals traditionally culminate the 15-day celebration of the Chinese New Year. Each lantern design is full of Chinese tradition, with some resembling Terracotta warriors, dragons, pandas or Buddha.

Missouri Botanical Garden to host Chinese Lantern Festival

told them if they want a higher resolution file of any of the photos to

That's all I'm going to get out of these photos. About 50%, most of the
rest blurred to model movement.

Next Meeting, June 20th - but where?

The Summer Solstice is approaching, and so is our June Third Monday meeting (a day earlier). The Druids gather at Stone Hedge to celebrate the longest daylight. Well, Stone Hedge is a bit far to schedule a photoshoot of the event, but we ought not pass up the opportunity for a late sunlight photoshoot right here in Saint Louis. Got an idea? Toss it out, and let's find a place to converge. Have a spot to watch the sun go down? Have a place to take pictures of flowers? People? Candids? Cityscapes? Street life? What and where do you recommend we gather for a shoot? Let's break out of our patterns and explore. No sense in us sitting inside.

The Cardinals have the night off. The Zoo closes at 7pm, and MoBot even earlier. We recently shot at Oak Park (Artists Guild Park), The City Park, The Arch, and a little bit further back, Union Station.

Artists Guild: Meeting Notice, May 16, Third Monday - Copyright and Flashbus

Reminder - Monday evening meeting on Copyright Law. This meeting is open to all Artists Guild Members and guests. Someone suggested this, and it is a great idea - jot down your questions for the Copyright Attorney before the meeting. So often you'll forget to ask that question as you listen to others. A little reminder to yourself will keep you from kicking yourself Tuesday morning.

During our first hour, Bernard Gerdelman, an attorney will speak about both the latest & general copyright issues with a Q & A discussion to follow. Learn what it means to have a copyright and how to register one - what a difference that means to you. Even if you think you know the copyright law, there is always something more to learn.

Next, David Coblitz will then use remaining time to give a summary of what he learned at the Hobbie/McNally Flash Bus Tour, April Photoshoot results, and the latest Photovision DVD.

We will attempt to promptly start at 7pm. Please arrive a couple of minutes early.

Have you been doing something different? Let us know - whet our appetite. Our group is quite diverse in subject matter, and I'd like to see some presentations from the people hiding in the back rows at the meetings. You can tease us on the blog, or bring an example. Even if all you want to do is run a slideshow of recent works, let's see what you've been doing!

Belleville's Art on the Square - this weekend: http://www.artonthesquare.com/ - get out and see what others are doing and selling. This Art Fair is a highly competitive juried event. Ranked high in the nation standings. Stop by Marvin's Camera and say "hello" to Roger and Joanie - on Main Street, east of the circle (159) and just west of High Street. The friendliest camera shop in the area.

Fw: Chesterfield Arts Exhibition

Randy Allen was accepted to exhibit one of his images - "The Awakening - an Interpretive Perspective" in a juried exhibit called "Sharp Shooters: The Best Photography (Just) West of the Mississippi" here in Chesterfield at the Chesterfield Arts Gallery near the Chesterfield Mall.

The image is a composite of 5 images and depicts "The Awakening" sculpture, by Seward Johnson at sunset. Randy employed HDR and Photoshop software to create this image to lend his perspective to this wonderful work of art here in Chesterfield. All of the sculpture images were shot on the same day - April 2nd of this year.

This is his first juried exhibition (Congratulations!), and one of 21 artists (from a field of 76) to have their work displayed in this gallery for 2 months from May 20th to July 16th. This should be a neat show as the juror had over 200 images to select from.

His image has been printed on frameless aluminum in 16x24, and it really turned out well.

Randy would like to get feedback from his fellow guild photographers on this piece.

David Coblitz will follow up on what happened at the FlashBus tour that came through town last month. A quick review of the model shoot from April 19th, and a review of another DVD.

For folks not familiar with them, Kubota Image Tools makes some really nice actions for Photoshop (and now Lightroom). They also have a number of digital recipe books. These books show how images are made, using their products.

Kubota products are fairly pricey for what you get - but they deliver exceptional results. Larry Fink is considered one of the modern masters of photography. Life is a fulltime job, but if you can free up some of your time to volunteer at the Guild for this fundraiser, you'll have a good time, and so will the patrons. Hopefully, you can volunteer even if for one hour. some positions already have names (see attached), but even if you can add an hour to help there, it will be appreciated. There are lots of different opportunities for volunteering, too:

This begins as soon as possible and will be quite instrumental in our financial success. Your duties will be in procuring sponsorship and/or donations from individuals and corporations. You must be comfortable calling on people and speaking in positive and grand tones about our wonderful Guild. We have already made packets for you to take with you to make this smooth and pleasant.

Silent Auction

You will be assisting Joanne Stremsterfer in the solicitation, documentation, display, and sale of silent auction items. The silent auction will be held at our Opening Party, May 20. This is an important element of the event. and has been an excellent source of funds for our Guild. Your work may begin well before the event.

Marketing Committee

You will assist Marianne Erickson, Adrian Aquilino and Karen Glines in the task of advertising our event and getting the press, the patrons, and the public here on May 20 and June 12! This is a very important job and begins immediately.

Artists Guild Members will have first chance to book their reservations @ $20 per photographer.

Total number of photographers will be limited to five photographers per model. We will switch models and photographers around to the various lighting stations where you will be given the opportunity to connect your camera into the strobes/flashes and give the models directions. Assistance will be provided.

If photographer slots remain available, non-members to the Artists Guild will be able to make their reservations @ $40 per photographer. Yes, this is higher than past Artists Guild photoshoots. We encourage you to join the Guild, not only for the reduce costs of attending the shoots, but also to be part of the Artist Community here in Saint Louis. You will have the opportunity to photograph four (4) different models, under different lighting, and with different looks, too. Build your portfolio and learn something about different lighting you don't currently use.

Each photographer will be responsible for providing two (2) images of each model at each lighting station at a minimum size of 800x800 pixels of high quality JPEG. Image copies will be provided to the model, MUA, and hair stylists. A release will be signed before the shoot begins agreeing to provide this within 45 days after the shoot.

As discussed last night, the Flash Bus lighting seminar will be coming to St Louis on April 18^th.

For those interested in attending, this is a lighting seminar being put on by David Hobby (www.strobist.com) and Joe McNally (www.joemcnally.com/blog/). Both are small flash experts (i.e., speedlights). David is doing the morning session – talking about using small flashes in manual mode … while Joe focuses on CLS/TTL in the afternoon. Both are Nikon shooters, but the information (aside from some bits on Nikon’s CLS system and iTTL vs. eTTL) translates will across both the Nikon and Canon camps. The seminar is receiving solid reviews … in each of their stops, with many locations selling out.

The tour ends its run in St. Louis on April 18^th. Being that this is the tail end of the tour, it should be a lot of fun as they finish it up. Pricing for the seminar starts at $100. Both David and Joe have new DVD training videos out, so you can also purchase them: Pricing is:

Meeting Notes - 21 March 2001

The Saint Louis Artists Guild (SLAG) Photography Section - Third Mondays - met on the third Monday of March.

We were given a description of the upcoming SLAG Collector's Choice fundraiser. The Guild encourages its members to donate artwork valued at more than $250 to this event. See the SLAG website for more details. The Guild also needs lots of volunteers to make this event a success. More information will be posted here in the near future, or contact the Guild directly to let them know your interest in helping out.

Jim Trotter explained the ins and outs of photo copy artwork. Take a picture of a picture, right? Sounds simple enough, but to do that with the highest resolution and without glare? Not so easy.

Mount your lens perpendicular to the center of the artwork on a very sturdy stand. Makes the artwork in the sweet spot of the lens and minimizes and parallax view.
Use about 1.5X your normal lens. If full frame DSLR, that means about a 75-80mm lens. This minimizes the barrel effect of some lenses.
Shoot at the lowest ISO setting you can.
Jim recommends shooting a series of shots varying the f/stop from wide open to closed down. Then reviewing those images to determine what works best for providing that lens and camera the best possible image. Jim suggested a $5 bill or a postage stamp to have fine engraved lines to test the resolving power of the lens. his test is to take the image of a 3x4 foot frame, and place that bill or stamp in the corners and in the middle, the check the lens and its resolving powers.
Jim's setup is with two lights. One to each side. Both overlapping the artwork at approximately 45 degrees positioned about twice the diagonal from the artwork.

The gobos, or screens, or just black cloth with a hole for the lens is to minimize reflections.

Your assignment is to try to photograph an artwork using these methods, and to try the dollar bill test at the various f-stops. Post your results here along with the critical information: camera, lens, f-stop, ISO, well, just include the EXIF.

Mac MacKay demonstrated his sound trigger. A low cost device to active the flash (or shutter) based on a loud, sharp sound. Mac captured some amazing images of a rifle round blasting through an egg and other other items. Makes a huge mess. Also, makes the chef next door duck for cover. But results in some fantastic images, too. check out the simple and inexpensive manufacturer of the device: http://www.hiviz.com/ Some assembly required, unless you pay more.

By voice vote, the new Photography Section ByLaws were approved with a minor edit to move a sentence to another section.

Lastly, Eric (me) talked about the next meeting. First of all, the meeting will not be the Third Monday. It will be held the Third Tuesday - April 19th. The reason is The FlashBus will be in town on Monday, and several folks have voice interest in attending that program. If you ever use electronic flash, these are the guys to explain how to get the most from your flash.

Secondly, the next meeting will be a model photoshoot. Curt, Scott, and Eric are making the arrangements. The plan is to have four different lighting set-ups: studio strobes, continuous lighting (CFLs), electronic flashes, and single light source. We plan to limit the number of photographers to a reasonable ratio to the models: 4-5 per model, max. RSVP will be required, no exceptions. Email invitations will be send to SLAG members first, then opened to non-members. When the slots for photographers are filled, that's it.

These diagrams are not to scale, nor do they depict the actual lighting arrangements to be used. They are for illustrative purposes only. Each photographer will be allowed to move the lights around to make the effect desired. Others will be there to assist as needed/requested.

Lastly, I did not see the moon tonight, so the naked howling was called off.

Photography Section By-Laws

I. Purpose

The purpose of the Photography section is to recognize photography as a fine art; to be an advocate of and assist emerging photographers; to be a force in bringing photographic art to all segments of the community; and to be a resource and network for photographers of all ages and interests to improve their photographic skills. The section will work toward helping members have opportunities to exhibit their work and to raise public awareness of photography as a form of artistic expression.

II. Membership

General membership in the Photography Section of the St. Louis Artistsâ€™ Guild shall be open to members of the Guild in good standing (dues paid) with an interest in creating Photographically based art.

Honorary Membership. International photographers, not living in the St. Louis area, may be recognized for meritorious achievement and significant patronage to the field of photography.

III. Officers and Directors

The Board shall consist of a Chairperson, Secretary/Treasurer, Web/Blogmaster, and Exhibition Chairperson. All officers must be a member of the Photography section. The section elects its own officers. In the event chairperson is not available, the treasurer shall fulfill the responsibilities.

IV. Duties of Officers

A. The Chairperson shall preside at all meetings, shall attend the openings of the photography section exhibits, and shall promote the goodwill of the Photographers to the greater community and attend the St. Louis Board of Governors meetings.

B. The Secretary/Treasurer shall record the proceedings and actions of all meetings, and submit same to the Webmaster for distribution as well as submit written reports each month to the Board of Governors via the section Chairman, and shall maintain an accounting of the finances of the section including providing a projected budget for the approval by the section officers. He shall provide any financial reporting required by the Board of Governors and include as appropriate in the monthly report to the Board.

D. The Exhibition Chairperson shall be responsible for securing, jurying as required and hanging exhibits and shall attend all meetings of the Special Exhibits Committee of the Guild.

V. Election of Officers

A Nominating committee, consisting of the chairperson and two other members, shall select a slate of officers, who will serve for two years, for the coming year. The slate will be presented at the annual April business meeting for approval. Any member present may offer other nominations for offices.

VI. Committees and Duties

A. Membership Chairperson: shall welcome all visitors to monthly meetings, recruit new members.
B. Program Chairperson: shall secure program presenters for monthly meetings and all other speakers for special engagements at the Guild and shall secure jurors for exhibitions.
C. Promotional Chairperson: shall promote activities to the St. Louis community and provide listed programs and identification labels for all exhibitions.
D. Education Chairperson: shall promote education within the Guild and the St. Louis community.

Addition chair people may be added on an as needed basis.

VII. Meetings

Regular meetings of the Photography Section shall be held each month. The yearly term begins the 1st of June and end the last day of May.

Proposed amendments to the bylaws must be submitted to the officers at least 30 days before a vote can be taken.

Friday, April 1st, 2011– Please join us for The Third Annual Trivia Night at the St. Louis Artist Guild and silent auction benefiting The St. Louis Artists' Guild. The Guild is 125 years young and the oldest art organization of its kind West of the Mississippi! This event will be held at the Guild's beautifully restored mansion, #2 Oak Knoll Park, Clayton MO 63105. It is at the corner of Clayton Rd. and Big Bend Blvd. in Clayton, Mo. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. when guests are invited to view two floors of galleries that celebrate the works of local and regional artists. Be sure to stop by the Gift Shop filled with a variety of jewelry, gift items and prints for purchase. Trivia questions begin at 7:00 p.m. hosted by the colorful and talented radio personality, JOHNNY RABBITT. Tickets are $20.00 per person/ $160 for a table of 8. Artists' Guild Photography Section meeting minutes 2/21/2011

The photography section met on Monday night, February 21st. Section Bi-laws were discussed, and inputs/comments on the draft requested. The upcoming exhibit in the Members Gallery (April 8-May 6) was discussed including rules for entry, which will also be emailed to the section members. Jim True was introduced as our section's representative on the exhibits committee and the functions of that committee were discussed. An opportunity for an exhibit space outside the Guild building was brought up. The section chairman will discuss this with the Guild Chairman to clarify any guidelines relating to this sort of thing. The new policy of the Guild to focus the upstairs on exhibits targeted at Grants & the downstairs on exhibit opportunities for members was mentioned and well received. One new member paid for a family membership (Mac MacKay) and another said he was sending in his membership next month.

The business meeting was preceded by a well received talk, tour, and demonstration of the Guild's print making shop in the basement. This was given by the Gallery/Education Director, Gina Alvarez.

Here's something different to test your skills at capturing light - shoot in the dark. Not pitch black darkness of a sealed room. No light, no photography. What I'm talking about is night lights: Moon, stars, reflected lights from a distant.

Some really interesting effects, and only the stars to tell you that the images were at night, not midday. Just try and guess the proper exposure for these sorts of shots! The New Moon is this week on Feb 2, and the full moon is coming Feb 18. (Check out our 2011 Calendar, the link will always be there on the right)

Some folks take "moonbow" images at waterfalls, and perhaps the best know is at Cumberland Falls near Corbin, KY. And a wee bit of a drive from Saint Louis. But it is another example of photographers using extreme low lighting.

Fireworks might have exposure times of 1-4 seconds. City lights and taillights might go for several seconds. This one was 5 seconds:

But can you get your mind to wrap around an exposure lasting minutes?

The collection of blogs from the various Saint Louis Artists Guild sections has placed us in the finals for the RiverFront Times best art blog for 2011. Your inputs, your comments, your interest has given us this honor. Much like the claim for the world's best photo hidden away in someone's private photo album, a blog never seen nor read cannot claim honors. You make this blog and the other Artists Guild Sections' blogs work.

Let's keep sharing information, ideas, how-to's, and of course, photos.

Take a little time to look through the other Sections' blogs. Also look at some of the other finalists named by RFT. Lots of good stuff out there! Whomever should win the top award, congratulations goes out to them. We have a great year ahead for all of us in the Photography Section.

Monday night, we held the first Photography Section of the New Year, 2011. About a dozen people braved the potential freezing rain to hear David Coblitz explain his strobist solution to portraiture photography on the go.

David was faced with increasingly heavy equipment to tote from place to place, so he started looking for ways to lighten his gear. Electronic flash units are lighter weight than studio strobes. Dave showed how he set-up his lights to produce desired effects.

He uses a Canon 580 and 550 as his main lights, and he has two little flash units that do the job for background "halo light" and hair light (rim). However, more recently, he has been using a little two reflector attachment to one flash: http://www.presslite.com/home.php

Harsh and soft light was explained not by the diffuser or lack of one, but by the angle the light spreads over the subject. A harsh light is a narrow angle producing hard shadow lines. A soft light spreads light over a greater angle for softer shadows.

He recommended a book - Light: Science and Magic

Dave has also had the experience of his Canon 5D autofocus missing the aim point. Others had similar experiences perhaps one out of ten shots where the autofocus was close, but not quite correct. and like most of our discussions, we wandered around many other topics, including color balance, white cards versus grey cards, tethered shooting, lens rentals, and much more...

Here is some information Scott Frazee wanted to pass along, addressing various questions and topics discussed throughout the meeting:

Here are instructions on how to configure Lightroom 3 for tethered shooting (what is nice with using Lightroom is that you can use a wide variety of cameras): http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/3.0/Using/WS67a9e0c3a11b14966badab91285ff688ee-8000.html. While tethering has been possible with Lightroom for quite a while, it’s really become a truly usable feature with Lightroom version 3.

Individuals not interested in using Lightroom can also use Nikon or Canon software to allow for tethered shooting. For Nikon users, the software is Camera Control Pro 2 (http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Imaging-Software/25366/Camera-Control-Pro-2.html). Canon users can look into EOS Viewer (or Capture) to do the same. Of the options, though, Lightroom is the best bang for the buck.

USB cables are typically used to connect the camera to the PC/Macintosh. USB cables have a length-limit of 16 feet, which is why I use active USB cables when shooting tethered. I’ve had very good experiences using two Sewell Active USB cables for tethered shooting: http://sewelldirect.com/usb2extensioncable.asp. This cable has a repeater built in, so another cable can be used to extend the reach further. This is very helpful when shooting portraits, as the photographer wants to be able to move around his/her subject.

Cons: Have to really stretch to find anything, this is a good starter tool … my only items are nit-picks, so take them worth a grain of salt: The black section is glossy, and sometimes does not set black as accurately as it should; lack of “fine tuning” for anything but white balance and black points; target has to be placed in frame, which can be difficult at times

Pros: The color checker and passports are excellent for white balance and color correcting; most accurate option I’ve used
Con: Target has to be placed in the frame; creating custom profiles takes a little longer (although the software makes it painless); the original checker was easily bent – the Passport is a much more solid option; on the pricier side of the spectrum

**It goes without saying, but using a color calibration product for your images is only effective if you’re using a color managed workflow. At the very least, you must calibrate your monitor on a (fairly) regular basis to see the benefits from using these other tools.**

They ship all of their lenses in Pelican cases, and he's never had any issues getting replacements, extending the rentals … or shipping the items back.

Something to think about renting lenses - makes sense to rent a lens you might use very little or have a one-up special shoot for it. Some people rent to compare two different lenses, but beware you may either have the best lens off the line or the worst to squeeze pass the inspector's tolerances. It may not indicate how well a purchased lens might perform on your camera. Close, but not exactly the same.

finally, we also discussed how some folks lug around all their light stands and background holders...

You can purchase from a camera equipment shop special carry cases for all your photographic lighting needs, but some have found less expensive solutions: Canopy tent bags with wheels, golf travel bag covers with wheels, and Trotter's very own solution: a trash bin on wheels. Dave Coblitz gets his used canopy bags from a pre-school when they have to purchase new canopies. Eric finds slightly worn or damaged golf bags and canopy bags on-line at a huge discount. Photography equipment is expensive enough, but why pay more for something that is equally useful but not sold by a camera store?

Some events you may like to attend...

January and February is Eagle Season in the Greater Saint Louis area. Head up to Alton, and take a drive along the Great River Road towards Pere Marquette. As the weather gets colder, the eagles come to the open river to feed. The worst weather is the best eagle weather. If you are the type to stand outside in freezing weather looking at some bird, there's plenty of eagling opportunities indoors, too.

Prairie Commons County Library in Hazelwood is hosting a Live Eagle Wednesday night Jan 12th, from 7pm-8:45pm
Every Saturday in January and February from 10am to 2pm, TreeHouse Wildlife Center is open with a live eagle and some hawks at their new facilities in Dow, IL, just North of Elsah.

When the snow falls, do you hide indoors? Or do you grab that camera and find a wintery scene? Whether in the country, a city park, zoo, street life, or wherever, snow is magical. Get your long johns out and head outside. (Watch the exposure. Snow reflects a lot of light. It is easy to blow the highlights or let the meter throw everything else into the shadows.) Look for icicles and sunlight. Frozen fruits hanging in trees or vines. So much exciting things to see if you venture outdoors this time of year.

Big Congratulations to Carolyn for her first solo exhibition

I wanted to personally invite you to my first solo art exhibition called "Spectacular Visions ... The Photography of Carolyn Schlueter" this coming Friday, January 7th from 6-8 p.m., at the new St. Peters Cultural Art Centre, which is located inside St. Peters City Hall (next to the Rec Plex) at One Saint Peters Blvd, Saint Peters, MO on Mexico Road.

There will also be an Art Show Reception and Competition going on in the Main Hall at the same time and awards will be given out at 7 p.m., and I, of course, also entered that show. The theme is "Let's Face It," so there should be some interesting art of all kinds of different faces.

Learn how to get around in the program, add selected images to other pictures, change photos from color to black and white or sepia, and learn how to touch up and restore old photographs. You will also learn how to use type in your projects. You need to be familiar with the computer and mouse. You will need access to a digital camera and/or scanned pictures that are in .jpg format. Students will need to have access to some version of Photoshop in order to practice what is taught in class. Photoshop CS4 is the version on the computers at Central Sr. High.
I suggest looking on Amazon or e-bay to get a version of Photoshop CS3 or CS4. You can get just Photoshop and not the whole suite of programs. (Education discount may apply.)
Students should bring a flash drive to class to store your work.

The Saint Louis Artists Guild is turning 125 years old, but doesn't look a day over 104. Come party at the Gala event Wednesday, Dec 15th, starting at 6:00pm. This is to honor the long time artists and art supporters. There will be lots of special things going on. For example, William Bixby Sheldon, the great grandson of one of the original Guild founders, will bring a painting from his personal collection to display, and we will be able to use it as a background for photographing those attendees who wish to have a memento of the occasion. The Guild is holding a silent auction that will include ornaments personally made and donated by members among many other items. Of course there will be food & music as well as art.

Another artfully delightful year is over, and a new year full of creative visions await...

The Saint Louis Artists Guild Photography Section regular Third Monday meeting will be on December 20th at the Artists Guild building. Bring a date or your spouse or both. Or invite a fellow photographer to meet the Section.

There will be food and refreshments. Bring along a snack to share. This meeting is a light-hearted social event. Celebrate the year.

Anyone bringing an 8x10 will have an opportunity to exchange theirs for someone else's 8x10. It is a chance to share your work, and to receive a nice gift as well. Bring your 8x10 and tell its story, and leave with a fellow artisan's 8x10.
FAQ: 8x10 is a suggestion, not a requirement. Anything around those dimensions is fine. You can bring your image unframed, unmatted, unmounted if you wish, or you can mount or mat it. From previous years, most will be loose or matted. Remember to sign your work. It is a gift to another Section member. Make it a personal gift of your work.

Scott Frazee has offered to set-up his lighting equipment in one room. Those wanting to take photos of other attendees are welcome to do so.

Oct 18 Meeting Minutes:

Fantastic images from several members were shown. Mac MacCay just returned from a photo vacation in the Southwest, and he showed us the recents of night photography of bats feeding on cactus flowers and drinking water. Amazing images. Explore Mac's website: http://www.mrspiff.com/

Scott Frazee demonstrated some photoshop techniques, and shared with use some amazing local locations for photo shoots along the bluffs of the Mississippi, near Valmeyer. Do you have a location to share with others? Come to a meeting and share. Maybe invite others in the group to head out for a photo shoot. Our official meetings are held on the Third Monday of each month; however, individuals are encouraged to contact each other to go on shoots together more frequently. Make it easy for someone to contact you - send some contact information in to be published in a Photography Section directory.

Next Meeting: November 15th. Assignment PRIOR to the meeting - photograph an egg. Sound simple? Bring your interpretation of an egg to the November meeting. Scott has also offered to provide more information on retouching.

Here are my follow-up items from the meeting last night:

The name of the plug-in I use for skin retouching is Imagenomic’s Portraiture. You can find more out about it here: http://www.imagenomic.com/pt.aspx. Doing a quick Google search will bring up discounts/coupon codes ranging from 10 – 25%. I do not represent the company, nor do I get a kick back if you purchase the software ;) I like it because it literally saves me hours of time when working on retouching people’s skin as it can be batched into a Photoshop action. I know they also have a Lightroom tool, but I have not used that yet.

If folks are interested in learning some skin retouching techniques, I strongly recommend Nick Saglimbeni from Slickforce Studios. Here’s their website: www.slickforce.com (some of the images are not be suitable for work). The product/training is called Mastering Retouching, and can be found through the above site – or directly at www.masteringretouching.com. Again, note that the website may not be suitable for work; however, the training materials are very tastefully done, and never show anything more than you’d see at the beach. The set is expensive, but the concepts are very easy to pick up and adapt to your own workflow (I personally use a combination of his style and the Portraiture plug-in). It is important to note, though, that his techniques can be done solely with the tools within Photoshop … you do not need to purchase anything else to learn his techniques.

We’ll cover some of the high level aspects of the Master Retouching techniques (analyzing an image to see what needs to be “fixed”, contour mapping and doing basic retouching in next month’s Artists Guild meeting).

From the slideshow last night, the location out in St. Charles that’s above the tree line and is perfect for sunset/model shots is known as the WSSRAP. Be advised that the observation area at the top is small; four photographers and two models is workable, albeit a bit cramped. There’s about a ¼ mile walk from the parking lot to the top of the structure with a fair amount of stairs to climb.

In the spirit of Halloween, here’s some information on the mausoleum outside of Valmeyer, IL. It is called Miles Mausoleum; travel time from the JB Bridge is roughly 10 minutes. The mausoleum is part of a cemetery named Eagle Cliff Cemetery.

Further down Bluff Road (roughly five minutes further south from the mausoleum) is “Rock City” which are limestone tunnels that have been quarried and now store federal records. The stone structure housed the original power generator for the quarries and looks to be a great place to shoot. Advise models that the ground is uneven, with plenty of rusty items and broken glass on the ground.

Finally, the last location we talked about last night is near Castlewood State Park in Ellisville. Around the corner from the park, off of New Ballwin Road, you’ll find the Wildlife Rescue Center. Past the center is a gravel parking lot where the old stone structure of a long since destroyed bar/speak easy was situated (the name of the place escapes me). The “ruins” are all stone, with a number of nice archways and open window areas to shoot against. Again, it’s perfect for shooting models. The location is roughly 40 yards from decent parking and the walk is flat … so this is an ideal place to shoot and bring lights/gear to.

Local naturalist and professional photographer, Vernon LeClaire, will facilitate a Fall Photography Workshop on Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, at TreeHouse’s new education center in Dow, Illinois. Mr. LeClaire is a retired field biology teacher who has been photographing the outdoors for the past 45 years, operating Bluff View Photography for years. The Friday evening portion of the workshop will focus on camera and photography techniques and will run from 7 until 10 p.m. Additionally, Mr. LeClaire will lead a short owl prowl during the evening. Saturday’s activities are scheduled from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and will be, primarily, in the field. The afternoon will conclude with a group picture critiquing session. Both novice and experienced photographers are welcome to participate, and the workshop will address shooting with both film and digital cameras. TreeHouse Wildlife Center is a wildlife rescue, rehab, release center for raptors and small mammals. The Dow facilities are their new location for the Environmental Education Center. Spend Saturday afternoon exploring the colors along the river, or cross over the river on the free Brussel Ferry to Calhoun County Illinois for some gorgeous views of rolling hills, fields, and orchards. What's on your last roll of Kodachrome?

Perhaps you've heard National Geographic photographer, Steve McCurry, received Kodak's last roll of Kodachrome. He finished the shoot, and the roll has been developed. What would you take if that honor had been yours?

Dwayne's Photo Service in Parsons, Kansas is the only place you can still get Kodachrome developed. From their website: "Kodachrome Film Status: The last day of processing for all types of Kodachrome film will be December 30th, 2010. The last day Kodak will accept prepaid Kodachrome film in Europe is November 30th, 2010. Film that is not in our lab by noon on December 30th will not be processed."

I'm debating. I have some Kodachrome 25 and 40 in the defrosted freezer. Should I shoot it? Or should I allow my memories to be as vivid as the last shot I took using Kodachrome several years ago? Will I be disappointed in the results? Perhaps the freeze-thaw cycles over the years have aged those rolls of Kodachrome. I have four months to decide. Seems bright colors of summer are the perfect time to use my rolls rather than waiting until a cold foggy wintery morning on the river.

What images are on your last roll of Kodachrome? Do you know yet? Will you discover them? Time is running out.

St. Louis Camera Show

I talked with the folks at Creve Coeur Camera, and while you might like to sell some old equipment, there may or may not be a buyer or one willing to pay your price. Still, it is an opportunity to clean your closet of equipment you've forgotten how to use.

Word on the street is that Canon AE-1 camera bodies are hard to sell. No real market. I got four batches of chocolate chip cookies for a Canon AT-1 plus 50mm f/1.4 and 75-205mm a few years back; however, at this camera show, they will offer cash, not cookies.

Schedule a small group to shoot either in a studio or on a location, book a model or two. Share the costs. Use the power of the Saint Louis Artists Guild to work for you!

Need help with booking a model? Don't know where to start? Engage in that conversation with your fellow Guild members. On-line model agencies or modeling sites make finding a model as simple as an email. Don't expect models to come running for a TFP/TFCD arrangement, and some do not like group shoots. Try the next one.

Bring your camera! We are planning a photo shoot in Oak Knoll Park around the Artists Guild Building. While we often do model shoots using studio lighting, we decided it was time for something a little different. Get your creative mojo hat and explore the surroundings to a building we often visit but rarely see.

Bring your macro. Bring your wide angle. Bring your telephoto. Who knows what you'll see by doing something different. Sunset is 8:23pm or so, depending which sunset you use and how precisely you which to claim longitude and latitude. Sunlight refractions? Local tree/building horizon, and all that fun stuff. Well, you might bring a tripod and/or flash, as the time cannot account for clouds. Come early if you prefer.

Rain? Don't even think about it! Well, okay, if it rains, those so sweet as to melt in the rain can explore inside.

We'll once again delay Vivian's Ten Best to the next regular meeting. Sorry Vivian, but I promise we'll have a projector ready to go for when we do get to see your interesting captures.

High Speed Sync Flash Presentation

At the June 21st meeting, Shel Sherman presented the following charts to help explain the Canon system for high speed flash sync...

Curt Parker then demonstrated the Nikon system - a bit more straight forward.

The old Nikon-Canon war was avoided. While Nikon had the preferred interface to high speed sync flash, Curt admitted to Canon's simpler live-view design. Each has their good points.

We also had the lively discussion of shooting JPEG versus RAW. Editting at large pixel counts before reducing, or reduce before editing. Each comes with its own set of pros and cons. No right or wrong answer - what works best for you is best.

Three folks left happy with a handful of inkjet cartridges each. Jerry Anna was the lucky winner of the Cheetah Mounts 6'x10' black backdrop.

David Coblitz showed his latest mounted prints - printed, matted, and framed by fineartamerica.com - Dave like the arrangement they make to draw business and leaving the decisions to his cutomers to pick colors and styles. Discussion Topic: Digital Noise Reduction

With Canon digitals, I'm a ISO-100 type of guy. In the film/transparency days, I used to shoot Kodachrome 25 and Pan-X 32. My wilder side was VPS at 160 ASA. WooHoo!

Digital cameras are starting to allow ISO settings up to 12800 - and 102400 with boost. Completely silly, imho, but there it is. Of course, those high ISO settings are not free. There is noise. [Briefly, electronic signals are not precise. They vary ever so slightly and randomly. So if the light hitting a pixel on your sensor is very low, the real light to variations in the basic electrical signal is very low. The camera cannot tell the difference between the random electrical signal and the real light. This is often seen as "noise" or a grainy effect in digital images.]

The more recent digitals, especially Nikon, have decreased the noise considerably. Why I've even been known to bump my ISO clear to 200, and even 400 when absolutely necessary.

Post processing noise reduction filters are also widely used:

Noise Ninja - widely used, because it works well
Topaz Labs DeNoise - gaining in popularity

Of course, Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, et al, all have built-in noise reduction filters as well. Perhaps you have a favorite filter? Leave a comment to suggest more. Have real examples? Bring them to a meeting sometime to share.

You might not convince me to go to higher ISO, but then again you might!

Flash fill-in light

Last meeting David Coblitz showed a DVD entitled "Cowboy Bride" - two photographers using electronic flash units as fill lights during the midday sun. The video showed them using aperture priority mode (AV-Canon, A-Nikon) with the flash unit set for ETTL (exposure through the lens). They demonstrated how to lock the exposure for the blue sky and use the flash close up to match the lighting on the subject. Simply put, hold the exposure for the background lighting, and use the flash to match it on the subject. Simple, yes?

"Not quite so fast," says Shel Sherman and David Coblitz.

From Shel, "To take the picture proceed as follows. Set the camera to Aperture priority, the flash to ETTL, and the F stop to the desired value. Select the sky in the viewfinder and hold the fire [shutter release] button half way down. While holding the [shutter release] button down point the camera to the subject (bride in this case) and press the AE lock button which will cause re-focussing to occur. Press the button fully and the picture will be taken correctly."

As Shel and David found out, at least on the Canon, the factory default settings will not achieve this in AV mode. You need to adjust the custom settings to allow this to work correctly. Look for "AE LOCK/AF" - Now, things will work just fine for you. Your first half shutter release gets the exposure, then you hold the lock button. Your next button push will perform the auto focus.

Depending on your camera, you'll want to pay attention to max sync speed you can get. Normal Canon operations is around 1/250 second, but depending on the flash, you may be able to sync at much higher speeds with reduced power.

If all the button pushing and holding is too much to remember, go manual.

You can use this tip to get fantastic portraits at sunset/sunrise using a flash. Expose for the sunset, but make the flash match that exposure for the subject. Taking pictures around the house and some bright light is in the lightmeter's range? Expose for it, and have the flash adjust accordingly. Someone standing indoors in front of a bright window? Same thing.

It is always smart to practice a technique many times before that day when you'll really need it.

Jim Trotter stepped down as the Chairman/President/Grand Poohba of the Saint Louis Artists Guild Photography Section tonight. The members in attendance elected David Coblitz to head up our group activities.

Jerry Anna presented his images from Formula One racing across the country, and gave us all an interesting perspective on how to capture such image while not having a ton of roaring metal crashing into you at over 200 mph.

David Groen showed off his new iPad and some of the features for presenting images. Cameras equiped with Live View can be connected to the iPad for a very large viewfinder.

Finally, we watched a couple of videos that David Coblitz brought along. One on baby photography, including photoshopping. Interestingly, This pro photographer would edit one image to demonstrate how the others could also be editted. Rather than spending a lot of time editing several poses that the client may never select. Also shown was a video of duo of photographers shooting bridal pictures out on the city streets using flash units connected by radio transmitters/receivers: three cameras, two cowboy boots, and one rat trap. An interesting set of bride pics.

On a sad note, Eric's beloved Canon i9900 printer died. The printer leaves behind several Canon BCI-6 ink cartridges which will be given away at the next Artists Guild Photography Section Meeting: 21 June. Vivian Waters is on the schedule for presenting her "ten best" in June!

The next meeting of the Saint Louis Artists Guild Photography Section will be April 19th. We will be hosting a model shoot. We plan on having four models with various lighting set-ups. The models will be posing for portrait work, swimsuit, and costume.

To cover the costs of the models:
Members will be charged $10, and
Non-Members will be charged $20 at the door.
After the shoot, we will ask the photographers to post their works to our group's Picasa album to allow the models to download images for their portfolio.

Space is limited to 25 photographers. You must RSVP (leave comment here). Those reserving a slot are expected to pay show or no-show. Please be certain you will attend before RSVP-ing.

Curt Parker presented Portrait Professional to demonstrate how he (and others) make corrections on portraits. While the same thing can be done within Photoshop, Portrait Professional software is specific to faces and bodies and quite inexpensive. You will save numerous hours on a project once you learn how to use this tool in conjunction with Photoshop.

Lee Lewis presented some of his artwork. Impressive morning shots at the Alton bridge, and from all around, too. Lee's work is diverse. He is seeing the world in unique ways.

Others shared an image or two they brought along, and we want to encourage everyone to do the same in the coming monthly meetings. Sharing your work is important. It forces you to be more critical of your art, and that makes you a better photographer. That is want the Artists Guild is about. Make it work for you. Greg, Mike, David, and Jim all shared various works. Bring a couple of yours to the next meeting!

Jim Trotter suggested his reign as the Photography Section President has been too long. He is not leaving the group. He just wants to share the leadership experience for others. Anyone interested in stepping up is welcome to submit their name for the group to elect. Anyone willing to attend the Guild's meetings and help direct is welcome to toss their name into the hat. This is not a talent contest, but a leadership position. Some of you might wish to add to your professional resume. That's fine, too. We have many people who would be wonderful in this role.

In the near future, perhaps March, we'll schedule a model(s) for portraits. Eric Bloemker tossed around the idea of having various lighting set-ups from studio lights to flash to a light in a coffee can, Something to fit all budgets. Well, maybe not the coffee can. The idea is for you to see what you get with the different equipment. We cannot always bring the shoot to the studio nor the studio to the shoot.

Reminder: if you were thinking of submitting a Mississippi River landscape image to the National Great Rivers Museum contest, time is closing in on you. If you want to stitch together images to get to the pixel requirement, that is allowed, but make sure the seam is invisible. At 8'x18' imperfections will be noticed.

File Storage

There are two types of hard drives: Ones that have failed, and ones that will fail. How do you back-up your images? Do you have a stack of DVDs? Do you know if you can still read them?

Do you save all your images? Or just the good ones? With RAW files getting huge, storage is a concern.

When was the last time you made a back-up?

Warning: when copying files from one external HD to another, try not to knock both off the table top to the floor.

The Saint Louis Artists Guild Photography Section hosted a model shoot on September 21, 2009. Four models, two make-up artists, and over 30 photographers attended. Photographers included guests from a Meet-up group and the Saint Louis Camera Club along with Artists Guild members. Some of the results from that evening's shoot are located in the following folder:

We encourage others to upload their best shoots of the evening to the Picasa folder for public viewing. Recommend you "sign" your work with your name on the image. Image size of 800x600 pixels is plenty, but you can upload larger or smaller, if desired. Tis September 19th be "Talk Like a Pirate Day"

Ye be a bilge rat, ifn ye fails ta grab yer camera and set sail for Wentzville. Tis there they be the Saint Louis Pirate Fest a goings on.

Seems I didn't fire me Canon at a pirate all day. So it be. Tis beauty not be a pirate, not even a grog totting wench. A belly-dancer she be. Their sails set port after September 27th on this year's Pirate Fest. Open Saturdays and Sundays, 10am-6pm. Arrg!

• He has two and a half years of graduate work at the California Institute of
the Arts in experimental animation. During this time Steven Spielberg
visited his studio and told me that he liked my work

• He started my career at TBWA advertising where I worked my way up
from Production Artist to Art Director on their flagship brand:

• During the past fifteen years he has freelanced at: Advertising
Savants, Bream Marketing Group, Clarion, Core, Fraser Design Group,
