Meeting Notice: July 20

The next meeting of the Saint Louis Louis Artists Guild Photography Section will be
July 20, Monday
7:00 pm til 9:00 pm
The Brentwood Gallery
2119 South Brenwood Blvd
(1/2 mile south of I-64/US40)

Get your new art ready for exhibiting! Any Artists Guild member is welcome to exhibit their artwork. If you are currently on exhibit, please plan on swapping your artwork with new works - at least half is the guideline we use. This is the time and place to show what sort of works you enjoy. The only limit to the number of pieces you may exhibit is wall space. We need to share teh space, but we don't want empty wall space either.

The primary purpose will be swapping artwork from the gallery for our next opening (July 31). Due to various costs in operating the gallery, there will be a $20/artist fee. This is a flat fee whether you plan on showing one or ten or more pieces. This fee includes your refreshment tab for Opening Night and printing materials. The remainder covers utilities and such.

Also, the folks attending the last meeting, Twilight Photo Shoot at the Arch Grounds, please bring along some examples of your shots to share, or upload some JPEGs to our Picasa album by emailing:
mailto:STL.ArtistsGuild.Photographers.artistsguild@picasaweb.com?subject=ArchShoot
(leave the subject line ArchShoot). This will place your images on the Blog's slideshow for the June 16 blog entry.

Even if you are not planning on exhibiting your work for this next opening, please come on out to the Gallery. See what others are doing. Lend a helping hand. Add to the discussions. We'll have a brief meeting to discuss what else we want to do for upcoming meetings. Model shoot? Location shoot? Photoshop training? What do you want to do? Let us know.

Kodak Don't Take My Kodachrome Away!

Kodak retires Kodachrome

The announcement got me thinking of what lay in my deep freeze. It's been several years since I shot film or slides. Digital has taken over. It's too convenient. It's too good.

I used to shoot Kodachrome 25. Love the fine grain. When I needed higher speed, VPS film with a range of ASA from 125-160 was my choice. And yes, you do see a roll of Ektachrome 400 in the picture - extreme conditions only. How long ago was Kodachrome 40 made? I was surprised that not a single roll of Kodachrome 64 was present, but I seldom used it. Still a supply bin should have supplies.

One Kodachrome lab will remain until 2010. Not much time to decide I must shoot the remaining stock. I'm thinking I'll never use up my supply of Kodak mailers, too.

What's in your freezer?

Artistic Flea Market

WestEndWord.com ran an article on the Brentwood Gallery.

Artistic Flea Market

Dickson Beall says,
A jury, curator or curatorial group needs to dictate a theme, perspective or organizational structure that will raise questions and offer new insights. Lacking a disciplined curatorial approach, an art exhibition can appear little more than a flea market. Not that a flea market can’t be fun — the pleasure of uncovering a small dusty treasure can bring a tingle to the blood and can kick-start hard-core endorphins into high gear.

I'm less inclined to themes. I rather like the diversity of interests we have at the gallery. Themes and juries are fine when there are too many artists for the space available. But as a group of photographers ranging from professional to novice, examples from all should be shown. Your best image is your best. It does not have to compete with another person's best. They each can share a wall.

What's your opinion? Should we strap flea collars on each photographer and have a limited theme that only the best (in a couple of people opinion) be displayed? Or should we be proud of our best works regardless of where ours might rank with others?
